The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) top order has finally found their best form of the season, but it has all come too late after they suffered their ninth loss of the season thanks to another freakish Vaibhav Sooryavanshi masterclass.

Marsh was very much a part of LSG's early season malaise when he registered three consecutive scores of 15 or below, but has closed out the campaign in imperious form with a 38-ball 90 in a successful run chase against Chennai Super Kings before his overnight innings of 96 that included five sixes and 11 fours.

His opening partnership with fellow Aussie Josh Inglis (60 from 29 balls) rocketed LSG to a six-over powerplay score of 0-83 before little-known 19-year-old Indian leg spinner Yash Raj Punja put the brakes on with his subtle changes of pace, bowling Josh Inglis and getting West Indian Nicholas Pooran (16 from 11) caught down the ground.

The Australian white ball captain is well short of his seven 50+ scores for LSG in 2025, with just four this year, but his mammoth two innings this past week has pushed him up to second on the league's batting charts behind 15-year-old dynamo Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

He could surpass his career-best season total of 627 runs with 65 or more in their season closer at home to fifth-placed Punjab Kings, who need to win to have any chance of making the end-of-season finals following a six-game losing streak.

Sooryavanshi showed Marsh up with some more of his unbridled youthful bravado that has seen him treat the world's best bowlers, from Jasprit Bumrah to Josh Hazlewood, with complete disdain.

With another ten sixes in his 38-ball 93, Suryavanshi took his season tally to 53 sixes, just six short of Chris Gayle's IPL record of 59 set in 2012.

LSG's season collapsed with a six-game losing streak that saw them bowled out for lowly scores of 149 and 116 as well as conceding 254 against Punjab in what has been yet another lopsided season in favour of batters.

An animated Rishabh Pant defended his side in a post-game broadcast interview with some colourful language when asked to explain what has gone wrong for LSG, who are rooted to the bottom of the table with a 4-9 record.

"Sometimes, you know, it is hard," Pant said.

"On a (flat) wicket like this, there is less margin for the bowlers, you know and just having too many suggestions doesn't work you know.

"We are proud as a team regardless of how our situation is right now. You know, the kind of team we have, we know we can win this.

"Regardless of anything we are confident enough as a team and as individuals.

"It hasn't gone our way and everyone knows that but that doesn't take away the fact that we are a f***ing good team."

It came on the same day that Pant was omitted from India's ODI squad for three games at home to Afghanistan next month, whilst he was also stripped of his Test vice-captaincy for the one-off Test against Afghanistan, which was handed to middle order batter KL Rahul.
