Title winners
After three lost finals, Tomas Martin Etcheverry finally captured his maiden ATP Tour title at the Rio Open on Sunday after a gruelling weekend that saw him spend more than seven hours on court between Saturday and Sunday.
Several matches were suspended throughout the week as the tournament in Rio was continuously haunted by rain showers, which forced Etcheverry to play his semi-final match against Vit Kopriva just a few hours earlier, where a sensational comeback earned him an unlikely win as he came from a set down in two tight tiebreaks.
Despite suffering from occasional cramps in the decisive final set, the Argentine managed to pull himself through two matches on Sunday to eventually clinch the ATP 500 title with a 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-4 victory over Alejandro Tabilo.
It was much smoother sailing for Australian Open champion Carlos Alcaraz, who needed just 50 minutes to defeat Arthur Fils 6-2, 6-1 in the final of the Qatar Open on Saturday to secure his 26th career title win and his second this season.
Thanks to the win, the strong Spaniard extended his unbeaten run in 2026 to 12 matches, after having prevailed at the Australian Open, a string of wins that he also accomplished by April last season.
Sebastian Korda on Sunday became the ninth American to earn the ATP title at the Delray Beach Open, when he defeated fifth-seeded countryman Tommy Paul 6-4, 6-3 in the final to earn his third career ATP title.
With the title, the 25-year-old Korda moved up to No. 40 in the ATP Rankings.
Jessica Pegula has been in scintillating form at the start of this season, and her impressive performances continued at the WTA 1000 tournament in the UAE when she overcame Elina Svitolina in straight sets to win the Dubai Tennis Championships.
American fourth seed Pegula earlier in the year booked her ticket for the semi-finals of the Brisbane International and Australian Open in January, before she finally went on to secure the first title of the year with a 6-2, 6-4 win over the Ukrainian on Saturday.
Thanks to the win, Pegula became the third American to win in Dubai after Lindsay Davenport and three-time champion Venus Williams. It was Pegula's fourth WTA 1000 title of her career, and each of them has arrived in the last four years.
Biggest strugglers
Former Grand Slam finalist Jasmine Paolini crashed out of the WTA 1000 tournament in Dubai in the second round against the 20-year-old up-and-coming Philippine star Alexandra Eala.
It was more proof that Paolini is experiencing a significant performance dip, struggling to replicate her 2024 success with early exits at major tournaments and recent WTA events. Following a third-round loss at the 2026 Australian Open and a first-round exit in Doha, she seems far from the form that saw her reach the French Open and Wimbledon final in 2024.
Her recent problems seem largely attributed to her serve. Paolini’s serve is generally considered a weakness relative to the rest of her game, characterised by its lack of high-velocity aces and power compared to other athletes in the WTA top 10. It is often described as a more placement-oriented delivery that, instead of posing a weapon for Paolini, often offers her opponents the opportunity to grab the initiative in rallies.
In December last year, Paolini added doubles partner Sara Errani to her coaching staff in an effort to improve the tactical aspects of her game, but so far it's not paying off for the Italian, who is ranked seventh in the world.
Standout moment
Athletes from two different generations rarely team up to win a tennis tournament. Nevertheless, that was the case in Rio when Joao Fonseca and Marcelo Melo rallied past Constantin Frantzen and Robin Haase 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 in the final to clinch the trophy on their team debut in Rio de Janeiro.
Thanks to the win, 19-year-old Fonseca - who suffered a surprising defeat against Ignacio Buse in the second round of the singles' tournament - became the youngest doubles champion at an ATP 500 event, while 42-year-old Melo could celebrate doubles title no. 41.
With former ATP No. 1 Andre Agassi in attendance, Fonseca and Melo - who saved one match point against Jakob Schnaitter and Mark Wallner in the semi-finals - faced an early setback when they lost the first set, but recaptured the momentum to ultimately secure the victory in one hour and 34 minutes.
After clinching the win, Fonseca and Melo met in a long, warm, heartfelt hug to wild celebrations in Rio in a pure storybook finish to wrap up the Brazilian tournament.
Best rallies
Tommy Paul lost the final at Delray Beach against American compatriot Sebastian Korda, but he won this epic rally with a crushing cross-court forehand to break serve at the beginning of the second set.
Clara Tauson reached the final last year in Dubai and showed again against Jessica Pegula that she often produces her best tennis in the UAE, illustrated by this hard-fought win to win the second set in the fourth round of the tournament.
Upcoming events
Alexander Zverev will take to the courts again for the first time since the Australian Open when he takes part in the ATP 500 tournament in Acapulco, where the German is the top seed in the coming week. Second seed Alex De Minaur, who triumphed in Rotterdam, will seek to rekindle his affair with the Mexican tournament where he won in 2023 and 2024.
The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships will see Jack Draper return to action for the first time in seven months in the upcoming week. The ATP 500 tournament also offers a chance to see last year's finalist Felix Auger-Aliassime, as well as Jiri Lehecka, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Daniil Medvedev, and Stan Wawrinka in action.
A big part of the women's elite will make their way to the Merida Open in Mexico. The tournament features a strong lineup led by top seed Paolini, defending champion Emma Navarro (seeded No. 2), Ann Li, and Marie Bouzkova. Elsewhere, Dubai Champion Pegula will make her way to Austin (Texas) to defend her title at the ATX Open, where rising American teenager Iva Jovic and Texas native Peyton Stearns will also participate.
