Elmer Moller on Friday afternoon gave Denmark a superb start in the Davis Cup clash against Croatia as he defeated the World No. 235, Matej Dodig, 6-4, 7-6 in Varazdin.

In the absence of the injured Holger Rune, Elmer Møller is the highest-ranked Dane in the match against the Croatians (ranked 120th in the world), but tennis experts had expected this to be a very close match, which it also turned out to be.

None of the players gave much away in a very tight first. Dodig began very promisingly and won his first two service games, but at 2-2, Moller gained his first and only break point of the match and subsequently hit a ball too long to give Moller the decisive break.

Moller held serve from there on and won the first set 6-4, and the trend continued in the second set.

Both players found a way out as soon as they smelled trouble in their own serves. Moller, in particular, was strong in troubled times and won 86 percent of the points in the match when he got his first serve in.

With both players making very few mistakes, the second set had to be decided in a tiebreak. Moller remained focused to win 7-3 and the match 6-4, 7-6.

Later, in the other match of the evening August Holmgren, ranked 199 in the world,  got off to a terrific start against Croatia's best-ranked player in the tournament, the 20-year-old Dino Prizmic.

But the world number 121 in the latest world rankings raised his level considerably after losing 5-7 in the first set and bossed Holmgren around the court in the following two sets to win 5-7, 6-0, 6-2.

The winner of the showdown between Denmark and Croatia will meet either Germany or Peru in a duel for a place in the Davis Cup Finals.
