Danish referee Jakob Sundberg admits that Mikel Gogorza and FC Midtjylland should have been awarded a penalty in the match against Brondby on Sunday.

Towards the end of the Superliga clash, Mikel Gogorza tussled with the ball with Brondby's Nicolai Vallys and Gogorza fell to the ground after Vallys seemed to have pulled him down in the box.

Vallys afterwards also admitted that it looked like a penalty but referee Jakob Sundberg chose not to blow the whistle.

Gogorza was along with coach Thomas Thomasberg upset over the situation and failed to understand why Sundberg chose to let the fairly obvious foul go unpunished.

Now Sundberg has given his version of the scenario and admits that he made a mistake:

"I have reviewed the situation and, together with my team, have come to the conclusion that it would have been most correct to award a penalty".

"On the pitch, I assessed that the two players had a legitimate fight for the ball, and unfortunately I was unable to see the situation as I was behind a couple of players.

"There is a general acceptance that players use their arms to a limited extent in these types of duels, but in this specific situation the limit had been reached, and this is an illegal foul."

"This means that we can unfortunately conclude that VAR should have intervened, and I should have been called to the screen in order to award a penalty", he says to bold.dk.

Brondby won the match 2-0 in Herning.
