The Super Lig made its return on the weekend after the international break, and no one had to wait long for some drama and controversy. Fenerbahce, Besiktas and Galatasaray all claimed victories, but they all took different routes to the three points.

The big game of the weekend saw Fenerbahce - with new manager Domenico Tedesco at the helm - take on Trabzonspor in the first real standout clash of the season on Sunday evening.

The former Belgium coach would have been frustrated during his first match in charge, as Fener struggled to get into the game in the early minutes, before Trabzon thought they took the lead, courtesy of a thumping header from big centre forward Paul Onuachu.

However, after a VAR check, the goal was ruled out as the referee deemed that defender Milan Skriniar was fouled in the build-up. Frankly, it was an absolutely abysmal decision. It was never a foul in a million years, and Skriniar did his very best play-acting.

I don't like to criticise referees in general around the world, as I think people tend to go over the top with how bad they perceive them to be. However, the standard of officiating in Turkey is truly so far off from the elite leagues. It is a real issue.

Anyway, Fener were very soon given a massive advantage, as Okay Yokuslu was handed a straight red card for a foul on Kerem Akturkoglu. This decision was not so bad, but there was a world where Okay could have been given a yellow instead. It was a sort of in-between decision. However, the bar for fouls in Turkey is so low that if you accidentally sneeze on someone, you get booked.

From that moment on, it was all Fener, and they eventually took the lead on the stroke of half time, courtesy of an incredibly scrappy goal from Youssef En-Nesyri. It was his third Super Lig goal of the campaign.

Despite a lot of dominance and shots on goal, the game ended 1-0, and a lot of that was down to Trabzon goalkeeper, Andre Onana.

Signed on loan from Manchester United to replace the departing Ugurcan Cakir, the out-of-form Cameroonian was superb in goal, making eight saves and keeping Fener down to just one goal despite an xG of 3.13.

Tedesco admitted that Fener would need to be a lot better in the future, but it is, of course, very early days in his tenure. On the other hand, as you can imagine, Trabzon manager Fatih Tekke was absolutely furious with the decisions that went against his team.

Another outfit with a new manager, Besiktas were looking to get back to winning ways after a torrid start to the season, with club legend Sergen Yalcin on the touchline for just his second game on Saturday evening.

He had suffered a loss in his opening game against Alanyaspor, and Besiktas looked destined to drop more points in this fixture at home to Istanbul Basaksehir, too.

Loanee Eldor Shomurodov gave the away side the lead with around 20 minutes to go, before Besiktas' very own loan signing, El Bilal Toure, levelled proceedings just a few minutes later.

Basaksehir went down to 10 men in the dying minutes, which allowed Besiktas to pile on even more pressure. And in the end, it was substitute and debutant Cengiz Under who was the hero, heading home at the back post to snatch a 2-1 victory for his side.

Sergen has, in the past, been very public about just how much he has rated Cengiz, and was desperate to sign him when he was appointed as manager. It seems he has already repaid his faith.

One new signing who is seriously struggling, though, is Orkun Kokcu. The former Benfica midfielder was sent off in the 98th minute (again, incredibly harshly), summing up the rut he is in. Signed on loan but with a hefty obligation to buy fee, he has looked well out of his depth, struggling to keep up with the pace of games and failing to make an impact at all. They will need more from him.

But for Besiktas, it was an utterly vital three points. Exactly what the club and Sergen needed.

Galatasaray pick up another win

Three-time defending champions Galatasaray kept up their perfect start to the season, as they claimed a 2-0 win over Eyupspor.

Ilkay Gundogan and new goalkeeper Ugurcan both made their debuts, but in truth, it was a pretty ugly and scrappy performance, and they certainly missed Victor Osimhen up front, who was carrying a slight niggle.

Gala eventually took the lead in the second half, after a really clever assist from substitute Ahmed Kutucu allowed captain Mauro Icardi to thump home for his third goal of the season.

Another substitute, Baris Alper Yilmaz, who had started the game on the bench after some transfer speculation, changed the game when he came on. His electricity on the wing injected some life into the performance, and he set up Yunus Akgun for the second of the game to help his team over the line.

It is a huge plus for Galatasaray that Baris is remaining with them, as he simply possesses traits that the team doesn't have.

They begin their Champions League campaign on Thursday with a fixture away at Frankfurt. While it will be tough, it also represents a good opportunity for them to get off and running in Europe.

They will need to be miles better than they were on the weekend, but with Baris and Mario Lemina returning to the starting XI and probably Osimhen too, they should be better equipped.

Fenerbahce midfielder Sebastian Szymanski is the Flashscore Player of the Week, according to our very own internal player ratings, after a strong performance in his side's win over Trabzon.

There are three Antalyaspor and three Alanyaspor players in the team, as they both picked up very good victories on the weekend, while Fred, Icardi and Onana also find spots in the starting XI.
