In an official statement signed by Communications Director Sarfo Duku, the Porcupine Warriors announced that Owusu had tendered his resignation in the interest of the club.
“Interim Head Coach Prince Yaw Owusu has stepped down from his role with immediate effect. The coach stated in his resignation letter that his decision was taken in the greatest interest of the club.
"Management expresses its sincere appreciation to Coach for his service, dedication, and commitment during his time with the club, and wishes him the very best in his future endeavours.”
Owusu was appointed on an interim basis earlier this season following a shake-up in the club’s technical leadership, as Kotoko sought to steady their campaign in the Ghana Premier League.
Initially, his arrival brought a measure of stability, with the team showing brief signs of improvement. However, that momentum proved difficult to sustain.
In recent weeks, Kotoko have endured a poor run of results with just one win in their last six games. As a result, the Porcupine Warriors have slipped in the league standings to sixth. Performances on the pitch drew criticism from supporters, while pressure mounted on the technical bench to turn things around.
The inconsistent form ultimately left Owusu’s position under scrutiny, with reports suggesting his job had been under threat even before his resignation.
Following Owusu’s departure, Kotoko confirmed that youth team coach Hamza Obeng will take charge of the senior team on an interim basis for the remainder of the season.
“In the interim, Youth Team Coach Hamza Obeng will take charge of the team for the remaining games of the season. Further arrangements shall be communicated in due course.”

Obeng is expected to guide the team through a crucial final stretch of the campaign as management considers longer-term options for the head coach role.
With the season entering its decisive phase, Kotoko will be hoping the change in leadership can spark a turnaround in fortunes and restore momentum.
The club’s hierarchy is also expected to begin the process of identifying a permanent head coach ahead of the next campaign. Kotoko travel to face Dreams in the Ghana Premier League on May 3.
