Manchester United realise they have missed out on their biggest payday in relation to selling captain Bruno Fernandes, but sources insist a move could still become possible next year.

United could have cashed in as much as £100m during the summer transfer window when Fernandes had the opportunity to move to Saudi Arabia.

However, he was keen to see through the next phase of his career at United, aiming to finally lead the club towards success - and the club did not pressure him to accept the move.

At the time, there was an awareness that such a huge offer was unlikely to come around again, even though another offer from a Saudi club could still be possible.

Over the past week, there has been fresh speculation about a new Saudi bid, but it is understood that Fernandes still does not fancy the switch.

Insiders are adamant that there have been no new updates surrounding the situation and that Fernandes and United remain committed to each other for now.

It is currently expected that he will stay with the club for the entirety of this season.

His contract at Old Trafford runs until 2027, with the club holding a one-year option on top of that. However, there remains a lack of clarity on what will happen beyond this term.

Sources indicate that the player would be more open to leaving United if it meant joining a top European club.

The chance of a £100m transfer for Bruno has gone, though, and if he were to leave in the future, United may not even receive half that amount.

The situation is unlikely to become clear until the back end of this campaign, and it is expected that Fernandes will remain fully focused on achieving success with United, dealing with any speculation further down the road.
