The Danish women's national team on Tuesday night suffered a devastating 3-0 defeat at home against Italy in the Nations League

Denmark's women's national team on Tuesday evening suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat at home against Italy, and it could have gone even worse for the hosts.

Denmark won the first match between the two nations in the group 3-1 og the home side could centainly be blamed for taking a complacent approach towards the game as they passively allowed the visitors to take control.

The Danes already received the first warning in the fifth minute when Sofia Cantore hammered the ball against the post against a passive and disorganized Danish rearguard.

Denmark had their best chance of the match, when Italian keeper Laura Giuliani was forced to make a fine reflex save after 39 minutes to keep out a tricky delievery from Emma Snerle.

In the second half, the Italians gradually seized the initiative and took the lead after an hour's play, when Arianna Caruso played a quick one-two with Manuela Giugliano just outside the box to cooly finish past Stine Balisager much to the disappointment of the local crowd in Herning.

After 78 minutes, Amalie Vangsgaard and her teammate Jóhanna Fossdalsá couldn't agree on who should clear the ball in the box and Lucia Di Guglielmo did not waste any time taking advantage of the Danish error to volley home and double the visitors' lead.

Cristiana Girelli put the icing on the cake for the Italians four minutes from the end when she angled the ball into the net following a pin-point delivery to make it 3-0.

The result means that Denmark and Italy swap places in the Nations League group. Denmark are now in third place, while Italy moves up to second place.

Denmark still has to face Wales and Sweden. The two games will be played on 30 May 30 and 3 June.
