Newly-promoted Elche continue to defy pre-season predictions as their unbeaten start to the La Liga season continued with a 2-2 draw at Sevilla, but the visitors were left disappointed at conceding an 85th-minute equaliser.

A stop-start game took some time to get going, with Rafa Mir spurning the contest’s first big chance when he fluffed a sitter from close range as he barely made contact with the ball.

That came back to bite the visitors, because Matias Almeyda’s men took the lead shortly afterwards through Isaac Romero, who brilliantly converted an emphatic first-time snapshot from 20 yards after a long ball over the top landed at his feet for his second goal in as many matches.

Remarkably, that proved to be the only shot on target of the half, with Elche’s wastefulness epitomised by misses from Victor Chust and Martim Neto.

After the break, the hosts had the ball in the back of the net within 27 seconds of the restart, only for Romero to see his rebound ruled out for offside after Alfonso Gonzalez’s strike was spilt by the goalkeeper.

The visitors had been far from their best to that point, but they are unbeaten for a reason, and showed exactly why when they equalised in the 54th minute.

Andre Silva was left unmarked in the area and finished from Neto’s cross, netting his first goal since March.

With momentum behind them, Eder Sarabia’s side completed the comeback as Mir got his goal, curling a delicious free-kick from long range around the wall and past the despairing outstretched left hand of Orjan Nyland.

Sevilla made some attacking changes as they desperately tried to avoid a third defeat in four games, and after Elche’s Adria Pedrosa had headed wide of his own net, the equaliser arrived five minutes from time.

Peque Fernandez gloriously flashed a whipped effort into the top corner from an excellent Alexis Sanchez flick, netting just his second goal for the club.

Romero then thought he had won it, but his celebrations were cut short for a nudge in the back of the defender. The 2-2 draw means Elche are unbeaten after their opening four LaLiga games for the first time this century, whereas their hosts extend a miserable run of form on home soil to one league victory from 12 attempts in 2025.
