Round 1 of the Dutch KNVB Beker has kicked off with more famous cupsets, including that of amateurs GVVV and Hoogeveen - time for a roundup of Tuesday's first-round matchups in the Dutch cup.

GVVV - De Graafschap: 4-2

Third-tier amateurs GVVV from Veenendaal pulled off a big upset, beating Eerste Divisie outfit De Graafschap 4-2 at Sportpark Panhuis.

GVVV needed just 30 per cent of ball possession after they started the game off spectacularly. Justin Spies and Arwin van Soest put the Veenendaal amateurs up 2-0 inside six minutes, putting former Eredivisie outfit De Graafschap up for a massive challenge.

Former AEK Athens striker Dimitrios Theodoridis got De Graafschap back in it in the 23rd minute, but saw his side's deficit return to two goals when Quincy Veenhof scored a spectacular third for GVVV before the break. GVVV were in dreamland less than ten minutes after the break when Spies scored his second of the evening, putting the amateurs on the brink of the second round.

Striker Jevon Simons did something back for the visitors from eleven yards, but it wasn't enough to prevent a cup upset by GVVV, who reached the second round for the third time in the last ten years.

Hoogeveen - FC Emmen: 1-0

An even bigger upset was caused by fourth-tier amateurs Hoogeveen, who beat big-brother neighbours FC Emmen 1-0 to reach the second round of the KNVB Beker for the first time in club history.

24-year-old striker Sander Egbers made the difference from the spot in a game that much resembled asymmetrical warfare, with FC Emmen a promotion candidate in the Eerste Divisie and Hoogeveen a relegation candidate in the amateur fourth tier.

Emmen came close several times in the second half through chances for Julien Mesbahi, Rodney Kongolo, Nelson Amadin, Chiel Sunder, and Alaa Bakir, but none of them were able to beat an excellently playing Nick Borgman, who secured Hoogeveen's first second-round berth in club history.

VV Katwijk - Vitesse: 1-1 (4-3 after penalties)

A battling VV Katwijk, who made the second round last season, took it all the way to penalties against second-tier club Vitesse and eliminated the long-time Eredivisie outfit 4-3 after a spectacular shootout.

Former Ajax and Manchester United talent Dillon Hoogewerf opened the scoring after just under an hour of playing, but saw his team fail to hold onto the lead after Maurizio Brenna equalised for Katwijk in the 78th minute.

The amateurs even got a golden opportunity to take home a spectacular late win, were it not for Marciano Mengerink to have his 95th-minute penalty saved by Connor van den Berg.

In the penalty shootout, Van den Berg became the hero again by saving Dalien Maatsen and Bart Sinteur's efforts to undo Marco Schikora's miss. With the win on the line, Xiamaro Thenu hit the crossbar and youngsters Yuval Ranon and Ashraf Moustafa had their penalties saved by Stan van Bladeren. Katwijk captain Levi Bouwense stepped up for the final penalty and hit it past Van den Berg to complete the third cup upset of the evening.

VV Gemert - Fortuna Sittard: 0-1

Fourth-tier amateurs VV Gemert made Eredivisie outfit Fortuna Sittard work for their ticket to the second round of the KNVB Beker, holding the Limburg club to a measly 1-0 win at Sportpark Molenbroek.

Former Swansea City winger Kristoffer Peterson was the difference maker with a goal in the 48th minute, three minutes after coming on for struggling Fortuna.

Helmond Sport - PEC Zwolle: 1-4

Eredivisie outfit PEC Zwolle secured their spot in the second round of the KNVB Beker after beating second-tier side Helmond Sport 4-1.

Lennerd Daneels opened the scoring early for the hosts, who conceded goals to Kaj de Rooij and Shola Shoretire before the break. Groningen loanee Thijs Oosting closed out the game for PEC, who won their first official game since August 15th.

VVV-Venlo - sc Heerenveen: 0-3

Heerenveen, the third and final Eredivisie club to feature in Tuesday's KNVB Beker ties, qualified for the second round of the cup by beating Eerste Divisie outfit VVV-Venlo 3-0 in the far South.

Czech striker Vaclav Sejk put Heerenveen in the lead after 21 minutes, with a one-sided start to the game earning Heerenveen several chances to score an early decider. Midfield maestro Ringo Meerveld doubled the lead shortly after the break, after which VVV defender Luuk Verheij scored a mind-boggling own goal by passing it into a wide-open corner of his own goal in the 73rd minute.

FC Den Bosch - ADO Den Haag: 3-3 (4-3 after penalties)

Eerste Divisie leaders ADO Den Haag were sent packing early in the cup after FC Den Bosch beat the former Eredivisie mainstays 4-3 on penalties.

The two sides fought out a thriller in the opening 120 minutes, which were opened by two quick goals from ADO Den Haag. Luka Reischl and Daryl van Mieghem

Jari Vlak and Teun van Grunsven missed their opening two penalties of the shootout, as did Jesse Bal and Reda Akmun to put the two sides at 3-3 after ten penalties. As sudden death came around, Juho Kilo and Zaid el Bakkali were the first to blink with the eleventh and twelfth penalties.

ADO forward Nigel Thomas was the last to miss a penalty in the shootout, striking the crossbar with a rocket from eleven yards. Rafi Wolters confidently hit his penalty in the top left corner and put FC Den Bosch in the second round of the KNVB Beker.

Capelle - Roda JC: 1-5

Second-tier side Roda JC had no trouble dealing with fifth-tier VV Capelle, who were beaten 5-1 by the former Eredivisie outfit.

Iman Griffith and Jack Cooper-Love put Roda up two before the break, after which the pair doubled Roda's lead in the eleven minutes following the break. After Joey Paul Muller scored in his second-straight game, Capelle midfielder Fanny Waandels got one back for the amateurs, who put up a valiant fight as they went down 5-1.

Sparta Nijkerk - Almere City: 0-2

Fourth-tier amateurs Sparta Nijkerk held on for dear life against Almere City, but could not keep last year's Eredivisie contestants from winning 2-0 at Sportpark De Ebbenhorst.

It took a wonderful effort from Milan de Haan in the 61st minute to break the deadlock in Nijkerk. The home side fought for the equaliser, but were hit with a disappointing injury-time goal from Ajax loanee Julian Rijkhoff, who decided the final score at 2-0.

HHC Hardenberg - TOP Oss: 0-2

HHC Hardenberg, league leaders in the third tier and the highest amateur level of Dutch football, were close to an upset over second-tier side TOP Oss after holding on for over an hour in a 2-0 loss.

Hardenberg opened the game with the upper hand as Giovanni Zwikstra came close to scoring twice in the opening twenty minutes, but saw Mike Havekotte save one header and his other fly just wide of the post. Midfielder Lars Spit came close a third time for the hosts before TOP Oss got their first big chance of the evening, which Joshua Zimmermann shot just wide.

After more missed chances from Hardenberg, TOP Oss took the lead via an own goal from Danny Bouws in the 65th minute. A significant injury to TOP Oss defender Thomas Cox required the ambulance to enter the pitch and escort Cox straight to the hospital - a delay that cost the game twenty minutes.

Hardenberg knocked on the door following TOP Oss' opening goal, but could not prevent the visitors from doubling the lead in the 85th minute through Jules Van Bost, who headed home the deciding 2-0.
