Former Dutch international Dirk Kuyt has been dismissed as the manager of Belgian side Beerschot after a disastrous season in the top flight, the club confirmed on Friday.

The 44-year-old Kuyt took the Beerschot job in December 2023 after the Austrian Andreas Wieland left the post. Kuyt and Beerschot claimed the Proximus League title and clinched promotion to the Belgian Pro League after spending two seasons in the second tier.

In Kuyt's first season at a top-tier club, Beerschot only won three games in the regular season before being relegated back to the Proximus League.

On Friday, Beerschot announced it had ended the cooperation between the club and Dirk Kuyt, highlighting last season's struggles.

"The club sincerely thank Dirk Kuyt for his commitment, dedication and positive contribution," said Beerschot on the club website.

"His energy and involvement were a source of inspiration within the team. We wish him every success in the continuation of his coaching career."

Criticism

During his stint at the Belgian club, Kuyt criticised the club and the Saudi owner, Abdullah Bin Mosaad, with whom he barely had any contact after the sale of Beerschot star Thibaud Verlinden.

The Katwijk-born former professional expressed his concerns over his future at Beerschot in May. "A few months ago, I decided that I couldn't and didn't want to continue like this," he told Het Laatste Nieuws. Kuyt criticised the lack of players' home and training facilities and the club's professionalism, stating that the team manager simultaneously acted as the club's kit manager and groundsman.

The Beerschot job was Kuyt's second in professional football. In 2022, Kuyt was appointed the manager of Dutch second-division club ADO Den Haag. The former Feyenoord, Liverpool, and Fenerbahce forward was fired after 17 games in charge.
