According to Voetbal International's Lentin Goodijk and Tim van Duijn, Ajax are in talks with Fenerbahce over a potential loan of the 32-year-old Brazilian midfielder, who lost his spot in Domenico Tedesco's starting lineup since the arrival of Matteu Guendouzi. With a permanent transfer out of financial reach for Ajax, a temporary move would suit them best.

Fred is seen as a necessary experienced addition to a young Ajax squad, which is missing a true holding midfielder. The Amsterdam club attempted to replace former captain Jordan Henderson with Liverpool youngster James McConnell, but the latter's loan contract was terminated earlier in January after a fruitless first half-season.
Fred arrived in Istanbul in 2023 after spending five years at Manchester United, who paid €59 million to Shakhtar for the midfielder. The 32-time Brazilian international has made 109 appearances across all competitions for Fenerbahce.
