After another dominant win in the Dutch Eredivisie, PSV are now 17 points clear at the top of the table. It begs the question: what's the earliest the Eindhoven team could win the title?

An absolutely storming opening phase saw PSV take a 3-0 lead over Feyenoord within 20 minutes. Peter Bosz's men held on to this imperious lead over their nearest chasers, meaning they're now 17 points clear at the top. And it's only February 1st.

While NEC still have a game in hand, which will be played on February 11th against FC Utrecht, and could narrow the gap to PSV to 15 points, the Eredivisie table after round 20 looks as follows.

With Feyenoord struggling severely and Ajax failing to find any form, PSV are looking like the surefire champions already. But how soon could the Eindhoven outfit lift the trophy?

On pace for all records

If PSV hold on to their 17-point lead, the earliest they could win the Eredivisie title will be on April 11th, when they play away at Sparta Rotterdam in round 30. Coincidentally, PSV won last year's title away at Sparta and the title in 2023/24 at home against the Rotterdam outfit.

However, winning it against Sparta would not break any records. The earliest date on which the Eredivisie title was won was April 8th, 1978, when PSV won their seventh championship.

If PSV want to set the new record, they'll have to hold their current lead and win on April 4th, when they host FC Utrecht in round 29.

By rounds, AZ own the record by winning the title in round 28 of the 1980/81 season. PSV would need a 22-point lead to win the Eredivisie in round 27, which sees the 26-time champions face off against NEC Nijmegen on March 14th.

Competition

Based on current form, no one in the top 4 comes close to PSV. The league leaders won 9 of their last 10 league games, scoring 29 goals and conceding 9 along the way.

NEC, who are virtually second on points lost, have been the second-best team over the last 10 games, winning 23 points. Ajax are far behind with 18 points from the last 10 games, while second-placed Feyenoord have won just 11 points.

What also plays in PSV's favour is the remaining schedule. PSV have played (and beaten) Feyenoord twice already, while the away game at Ajax - their toughest remaining matchup - will be played in round 31. NEC, as mentioned earlier, will play PSV in Eindhoven on March 14th in a game that could actually decide the title race.

Meanwhile, Feyenoord are yet to play Ajax at home (March 22nd) and NEC in Nijmegen (April 12th).

Ajax first play AZ, a notoriously difficult opponent for the record champions, on February 8th. In terms of tough matchups, Ajax-NEC is scheduled for February 21st, FC Groningen-Ajax on March 7th, and Feyenoord-Ajax on March 22nd.
