Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike could be fined two weeks' wages for his behaviour against Southampton in the EFL Cup.

Ekitike was sent off for a second yellow card after removing his shirt in celebration of his late winner against Southampton in the Carabao Cup third round on Tuesday night, in what was said to be “stupid” behaviour by manager Arne Slot.

Now, as reported by The Daily Mail, the most likely punishment for Ekitike will be two weeks' wages in what is a harsh decision from the Reds, who clearly want to rule out such actions in the future.

Slot was left unimpressed with the Frenchman following his sending off and spoke in his post-match press conference about how his actions will not be tolerated.

"The first one (yellow card) was already needless and to a certain extent stupid because you have to control your emotions," the Dutchman said.

"I know how hard it is if you play in the Premier League and you are a number nine, then the defender can almost do everything he wants, and when you push him a little bit, you get a free-kick against you.

"But it is always best to control your emotions, and if you can't, then do it in a way that doesn't lead to a yellow card.

"So I think I said when I got my red card against Everton, that's always stupid because you can show your emotions.

"But if it leads to a yellow or red, then it's, to a certain extent, stupid."
