Liverpool manager Arne Slot has spoken to the media ahead of the Champions League clash with Real Madrid.

Liverpool beat Aston Villa 2-0 as the English champions marched to just a second win from eight games in all tournaments under Slot, who has been under immense pressure. The Reds beat Madrid 2-0 last time out and will hope for a similar result this time around.

Trent will get a 'warm welcome'

Slot first spoke on Trent Alexander-Arnold, who will return to Anfield this week for the first after leaving for Madrid in the summer in what was a very controversial move.

“I can only tell you what reception he gets from me. I have great memories of the player and human, my vice captain. I have memories working with him that are only positive.

“I watched him in front of the television and only great memories of him in a Liverpool shirt. He will get a warm welcome from me but let's see how our fans react, I have no clue. A warm welcome from me, that is for certain."

Team news

He then turned to team news and the fitness of goalkeeper Alisson Becker, right-back Jeremie Frimpong and striker Alexander Isak

"All three are not available tomorrow. Jeremie and Alisson will both not be available for Sunday (at Manchester City). Isak we have to wait and see.

"He definitely is not starting, maybe he can be in the squad but he is still not training so we wait and see."

Not thinking about Man City

The Dutchman went back to basics against Villa and secured three points. The media asked whether or not that will be his set team heading into the Manchester City clash at the weekend.

"Sunday's game is not in my thinking when it comes to the line-up tomorrow. There are four days in between and we've had a lot of moments where there are only two days in between. It's like that tomorrow, but it's the same for both teams.

"The line-up will have nothing to do with what's happening on Sunday. The good thing is we won on Saturday - and that was about time for us to start winning again.

"Every game we play is a test, not the same as last season, we played both at home but we are away at City. Real had a lot of injuries and now they don't. We are a different team, City made a few changes likes us. Every game we play now is always a test to see where we are. That was a week ago, two weeks ago and same this week."

Backing Wirtz

Slot next opened up on summer signing Florian Wirtz, who has had a mixed start to life on Merseyside, scoring zero goals and grabbing three assists in 14 appearances so far.

"You can say he started one of the last four but also a few games this season too. It's not an excuse, just how it is, but we have played many times three in seven days, for a player from a different league, the Premier League is a bit more intense, especially in all the games and the top games.

"If you look at that he has played a lot, had an impact in many games, unlucky in the end product by himself at times and the teammates.

"He can create a lot for the team, he will score but I don't think it comes as surprise to anyone if you are 22 to a new league, it might need some adjustment. Gravenberch was sitting here just now and took him a while to adjust, maybe even longer than it took Florian."

Should Gravenberch shoot more?

Finally, Slot was asked about Ryan Gravenberch scoring against Aston Villa this weekend if he has told him to shoot more often.

"I didn't tell him to shoot more, but he has been in and around the box more now. The main thing he has to do is set up the attacks and sort out the defence, but once in a while he can be a help offensively.

"This week he had a bit of luck and it got a deflection and that led to a goal."
