A red card for Liridon Balaj after 27 minutes was to prove costly for Drita when the Kosovo minnows suffered a 1-0 defeat at home against FC Copenhagen in the second round of the qualification for the UEFA Champions League.

The Danish champions from FC Copenhagen moved one step closer to the dream of gaining a place in the Champions League this season in Kosovo on Tuesday evening.

After the 2-0 win at home over FC Drita a week ago, Jacob Neestrup's team finished the job with a 1-0 victory in the second leg of the second round of the qualification.

In the third qualifying round, a Scandinavian clash awaits in all probability against Malmö FF, who, however, must first defend a 4-1 lead in the return match against RFS from Latvia on Wednesday.

Should FC Copenhagen win that tie, they will qualify for the playoff round which is the last obstacle before qualifying for the prestigious tournament.

Magnus Mattsson, who scored two goals in the first match between the two sides, wasn't selected for the starting line-up in Kosovo but that did not prevent the visitors from taking control of the game early on.

After 13 minutes, Andreas Cornelius dragged the ball over the goal line in two attempts, but he was marginally offside.

14 minutes later, Drita's Liridon Balaj was shown the red card after he stamped on Thomas Delaney's ankle in a horrendous tackle.

The red card offered all the initiative to FC Copenhagen who were awarded for their efforts shortly before the break, when Cornelius directed the ball into the net.

At half-time, coach Jakob Neestrup decided to replace Thomas Delaney and Elias Achouri who had both been given yellow cards during the first half.

The visitors did not play with the same tenacity in the last 45 minutes but despite a big blunder from Munashe Garananga midway through the second half, which provided a great chance for Drita, FC Copenhagen kept their focus to book their ticket for the next round.
