In our monthly feature, Flashscore shines the light on the best players in world football to see what has made them stand out from the crowd. Using cutting-edge stats as well as our player ratings system, we will delve into the numbers to see why they are performing so well. For March, Ugurcan Cakir was the standout star for both his club and national side.

In six games for Galatasaray and Turkey, the 30-year-old goalkeeper netted an impressive 8.5 rating, with an incredible save percentage, ultimately leading his national side to the World Cup.

Turkish hero

With the World Cup play-offs taking centre stage in March, a lot of pressure was on Cakir to perform and help Turkey to their first World Cup finals since 2002, where they finished third.

Against Romania, he was not called into action as his side won the game 1-0, but it was against Kosovo in the final where he showed his true colours.

His spatial awareness was something that stood out in that game, along with his wonderful save to tip Fisnik Asllani's effort over the bar.

Neither Romania nor Kosovo were able to breach his defences, as he led his side to two clean sheets and play-off glory.

On song for Galatasaray

Before his star turn with Turkey, Cakir was in fine form for his club side too. In fact, across the month of March, he did not concede a single goal, outside of arguably his best performance, which came at Anfield in a 4-0 defeat.

It feels counterintuitive to suggest letting in four goals can be impressive for a goalkeeper, but Cakir was imperious as Liverpool laid siege to his goal throughout much of the contest.

He would end up making 11 of 15 saves in the clash, showing what a scoreline it could have been had he not performed.

Elsewhere, he was instrumental in key league wins over Besiktas - making seven of seven saves - and Basaksehir, where he made three from three.

What this suggests is that the goalkeeper is a man for the big occasion. Ultimately, all goalkeepers are judged on mistakes, but Cakir did not put a foot wrong in March.

Could a big move in the summer be on the way for the Turkish number one?

The inside line

Tolga Akdeniz is Flashscore's Turkish football expert, and he believes the stopper has more than lived up to expectation since moving from Trabzonspor.

"Signed in the summer for north of 27 million euros from Trabzonspor to replace club legend Fernando Muslera, questions were raised about the fee paid for Ugurcan and whether he could make the step up. However, he has put those doubts to bed, producing standout displays on a regular basis, even winning games singlehandedly at times.

"And that hasn't been clearer than in March. Ugurcan had a stellar month for both club and country, conceding in just one of the six games he played in. That match was a 4-0 loss away at Liverpool in the Champions League last 16, and even then, he managed to rack up an 8.8 rating after making an incredible 11 saves in the game.

"Throughout March, he had a number of stunning performances. One came away at Istanbul rivals Besiktas, where he made seven saves and racked up an 8.3 rating, as Galatasaray claimed a huge 1-0 win in the Super Lig title race. Additionally, in their 1-0 first-leg win over Liverpool, he was also exceptional, making seven saves and registering a 9.1 rating.

"For Turkey, he kept two clean sheets in both World Cup play-off games, playing a pivotal role in his country qualifying for the tournament for the first time since 2002. His man-of-the-match showing against Kosovo in the play-off final made him a hero, where he made one heroic long-range save."
