Kaizer Chiefs breezed into the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup with a 3-1 victory over DR Congo side Simba, taking the second-round tie by the same score on aggregate.

Chiefs reach the pool stages of this competition for the first time, having lifted the now-defunct CAF Cup Winners’ Cup in 2001 and reached the CAF Champions League final in 2021, where they lost to Al Ahly.

The Amakhosi led early as Nigerian forward Etiosa Ighodaro scored his first goal for the club, firing in the rebound after Glody Lilepo’s initial shot was saved.

Any nerves that might have existed were settled on 14 minutes when defender Zitha Kwinika steered a free-kick into the net, his first goal in over three years.

The tie was made safe on 25 minutes as Lilepo’s bullet header from a corner gave the hosts a commanding 3-0 advantage.

It is the first time Chiefs have scored three goals in a match since a 3-1 Nedbank Cup victory over Stellenbosch FC in March.

The Soweto side will now feature in the pool stage draw, which will take place on November 3.

They will be joined by compatriots Stellenbosch FC, who also played to a 0-0 draw in their first leg against Equatorial Guinea side 15 de Agosto but won 4-1 at home thanks to goals from Thato Khiba (penalty), Sanele Barns, Andre de Jong and Chumani Butsaka.

Stellenbosch reached the semifinals of the competition last season before losing to Simba SC from Tanzania, a different club from the one Chiefs defeated this year.
