It is the continuation of a superb home record in the continent’s elite competition that has seen them lose only three times in 89 games over the past 32 years, since their debut in 1994.
It is among the best home records in the Champions League and without the skulduggery, on and off the pitch, that blemishes other clubs with similar records, who in many instances often do not present a fair fight.
Tunisia’s Espérance (twice) and Algeria’s CR Belouizdad are the only two clubs to beat Sundowns in South Africa.
The Brazilians went unbeaten through their first 35 home games in the competition after debuting against Arsenal from Lesotho at the dawn of democracy in the country. They won that fixture 4-1 and would go 35 games unbeaten at home up until 2017, when they lost 2-1 to Tunisian giants Espérance at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.

It was the third of the group-stage matches and, after Taha Khenissi gave Espérance a sixth-minute lead, Sibusiso Vilakazi equalised midway through the first half.
That was the way it stayed until the visitors were awarded an avoidable penalty in the final minute and Khenissi stepped up to give his side the win against the then defending champions.
The second defeat came in 2021 against Algerian outfit Belouizdad. Sundowns had already qualified in top spot in their pool and so fielded a weakened, much-changed starting line-up in what was a dead rubber for them.
Belouizdad were savvy enough to take advantage of that and recorded a 2-0 victory that saw them also qualify for the quarter-finals in second place.
Espérance inflicted the third, far more painful blow when they came to Pretoria and won the second leg of their semi-final in 2023-24 by a 1-0 scoreline to take the tie 2-0 on aggregate.

But apart from that it has been a fortress for Sundowns, with some big wins to boot.
They defeated Côte d’Or from the Seychelles 11-1 in the second round in 2019-20 and beat the latter’s compatriots La Passe 7-0 and 8-1 in 2022-23, when both legs were played at Loftus Stadium at the request of their opponents.
They have also recorded 5-0 and 5-2 wins over Egyptian giants Al Ahly at home, with both results sending shockwaves through that country’s football, especially the former.
In all, they have won 63 of their 89 home games, with another 23 draws, scoring 185 goals and conceding only 47. Their longest winning run was 13 matches, while they have never lost two in a row, and their worst sequence without a win is just three matches.
Their next home clash will be against Stade Malien in the quarter-finals of this year’s Champions League, though no firm date has been set for that. It will be on the weekend of March 13-15.
