Serhou Guirassy continued his sizzling run of form with a brace in Borussia Dortmund’s 3-0 win over Union Berlin, a result which puts Die Schwarzgelben’s Bundesliga unbeaten run into double figures.

Union’s impressive 2-1 success against Stuttgart last weekend clearly gave them encouragement that they could avoid defeat at this venue for the first time ever in the top flight, and they started well despite not fashioning any clear chances.

Things were different for Dortmund, who initially sat back but soon found themselves with openings.

Unfortunately, Guirassy was uncharacteristically blunt in front of goal, and he really should have beaten Frederik Ronnow one-on-one after Tom Rothe’s erroneous pass played him in.

There was a lull in chances after that, but the match exploded back into life in the final five minutes of the half. Debutant Aaron Anselmino misjudged his header back to the goalkeeper, but Andrej Ilic couldn’t find the target as Gregor Kobel rushed on.

And it took just two minutes for Dortmund to make him rue that miss, as Yan Couto superbly worked the space to cross in for Guirassy, who this time made no mistake to divert home on the volley.

That strike extended the Guinean’s scoring streak to seven Bundesliga matches, and he wasn’t done there. He also played a big part in creating the next by flicking Anselmino’s ball to Maximilian Beier, receiving it back and cheekily lifting his finish over Ronnow.

Steffen Baumgart’s side didn’t seem to have the answers to replicate St. Pauli’s comeback from two behind against Dortmund last weekend, and soon found themselves out of the contest when Felix Nmecha ran onto a cleared corner and bulleted into the net.

Dortmund’s win means that they extended their streak of winning at least one of their opening two Bundesliga fixtures to 18 successive seasons.

Given that this was just their second defeat in 12 league outings - and their first away from home during that period - Baumgart won’t be too disappointed in Union’s efforts, especially as they improved on February’s 6-0 defeat here.
