We are on the cusp of March and finally have the first Soweto Derby of the season on Saturday, with barely seven weeks remaining in the campaign, as the strange Betway Premiership scheduling has kept title-chasing Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs apart to this point.

As ever, it will be a feverish occasion at Soccer City in a game that sold out in hours, with a crucial three points in the title race as well as bragging rights up for grabs.

It is the first meeting between the clubs since the Nedbank Cup final last May, and much has changed within their squads since then.

Here is a look at three potential key match-ups on the field.

Brandon Petersen vs Sipho Chaine

This is not a direct head-to-head battle between the two goalkeepers, but in a way whoever comes out on top could win the day for their side.

Both have been in excellent form this season, with Petersen keeping 11 clean sheets in 16 league appearances, and Chaine one better with 12 in 17 games.

What fans will hope is that neither keeps a clean sheet this time round, with a draw really suiting no-one on Saturday, though it may be more useful to Pirates.

Petersen has been in and out of the team in recent seasons but has nailed down the number one jersey this campaign and shown his worth.

Chaine is very much number two with Bafana Bafana behind Ronwen Williams, but will be looking to cement that 2026 World Cup place in the squad.

As another Pirates keeper showed in 2010 when Moeneeb Josephs replaced a suspended Itumeleng Khune, anything can happen at the tournament.

Glody Lilepo vs Deon Hotto

Lilepo has really come into his own as a scorer and creator of goals in the second half of the campaign and will be a major threat for Chiefs on the right wing.

He was a little underwhelming at the start of this campaign but seems to have found his feet and is capable of the spectacular, as well as, perhaps, the calamitous.

Still, there are not many game-breaking players in what can be, at times, a ponderous Chiefs side lacking pace and invention, so fans must take the good with the bad and hope for the former.

He will be up against veteran Pirates left wing-back Deon Hotto, who has been one of the most consistent players in the Premier Soccer League over the last decade.

Hotto has barely missed a game since his debut for Lamontville Golden Arrows in the 2014/15 season and his know-how, and role as a creator of chances and scorer of goals from the left, is key to the side.

He has three assists this season to go with a goal, with only Relebohile Mofokeng and Oswin Appollis (both four) having more in the league for Pirates.

Zitha Kwinika vs Yanela Mbuthuma

Kwinika lost his way at Chiefs last season but looks to be back in favour in the heart of the defence and will have a key role in keeping quiet Pirates’ array of talented ball players.

Most of that work will have to be done by the midfield in front of him, but in striker Mbuthuma, Pirates have a focal point to play around at the head of the attack.

The latter appears to have taken over from Evidence Makgopa as the number one striker at the club and has done OK, scoring four goals in five starts (and 11 appearances in all) in the league.

He is mobile and athletic, though his finishing can still be a little wayward, and having someone with physical strength who is good in the air up against him is a must.

Kwinika fits that bill and will likely have a busy afternoon as he looks to quell the threat of the former Richards Bay forward.
