With Mamelodi Sundowns in CAF Champions League action this weekend, there is a chance for Orlando Pirates to move back to the top of the Betway Premiership if they can get a win at Richards Bay on Friday night.

It is one of several key fixtures in the top flight this weekend at both the top and bottom of the table.

Pirates go to Richards Bay

Free-scoring Orlando Pirates can go back to the top of the table with victory at Richards Bay on Friday night as they aim to make it 19 points from the last 21 available and keep the pressure on Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Brazilians have 56 points and a +30 goal difference, while Pirates are on 54 points and +36. The latter have won their last two league clashes 6-0 (vs TS Galaxy) and 5-0 (vs Lamontville Golden Arrows).

Richards Bay would climb into the top half of the table with a win, and have moved away from relegation trouble despite losing three of their last four league games, including a 2-0 defeat at Pirates in March.

All three of those defeats came on the road and Richards Bay are a much different proposition on their own patch. They have lost only two of their 11 home games so far this campaign (W5 D4), though Pirates did beat them 1-0 in KwaZulu-Natal in the Carling Knockout in November.

Pirates have in fact won the last five meetings between the clubs, and have six wins and three draws in their 10 previous clashes. They have never lost to their hosts in KZN (W4 D2).

Chiefs host bogey side Galaxy

Third-placed Kaizer Chiefs continue their push for CAF Confederation Cup football next season when they host TS Galaxy in Soweto on Sunday.

Chiefs are seeking a fourth successive league victory and currently sit in the final CAF interclub qualification place, a point ahead of AmaZulu but with two games in hand.

Galaxy reached the final of the Nedbank Cup, but their league form has been patchy and they sit down in 12th, though in no real danger of relegation.

That said, they have lost seven of their last eight league games (D1) and probably do need to arrest that run to make sure. Included in that is a 6-0 defeat to Pirates, the biggest in the club’s history.

The last four meetings between the clubs have finished in a draw, as have nine of the previous 13 overall. Galaxy have three wins to Chiefs’ one, illustrating how the AmaKhosi have struggled against The Rockets over the years.

Chiefs’ only win was a 1-0 away success in 2021. At home they have drawn five and lost two of the seven clashes.

Basement battle

There is a basement battle for the ages as two of the most out-of-form sides in the top flight meet on Sunday when Marumo Gallants host Orbit College.

Both sides have 18 points from 23 games, just a single point above bottom side Magesi FC in the automatic relegation position.

Free-falling Gallants have lost 10 of their last 11 games in all competitions, the only respite a 3-1 victory at Chippa United last month.

Orbit College have lost 10 of their previous 13 games, with a single win in there at Galaxy, also last month.

These are two sides who have forgotten how to win football games.

The reverse fixture this season ended 1-1, while they also clashed in the second tier in 2023/24, when each won their home game.

Magesi aim to go back-to-back

Basement boys Magesi FC will hope to make it back-to-back league wins when they go to inconsistent Sekhukhune United on Saturday, with a victory sure to lift them off the bottom of the table.

Magesi defeated Gallants 3-0 last time out to end a 13-game winless run in all competitions, and will hope to push on from there. They remain the only side in the topflight without an away win this season (D5 L7).

Sekhukhune are winless in six (D4 L2) and have fallen four points off third place and Confederation Cup qualification. They have probably already done enough to finish in the top eight but would have set their sights on the top three at the start of the campaign.

The teams have clashed three times before, with Sekhukhune winning twice and one draw.
