Mamelodi Sundowns claimed a 4-1 victory in their hastily rearranged Betway Premiership clash with Chippa United in Pretoria on Friday.

It was a polished performance from the side and another step forward in their bid for a ninth league title in a row.

It was also yet another home win in their extraordinary run, which we detailed here.

Allende strikes

Sundowns were knocking on the door and took the lead just past the 20th minute with a beauty from Marcelo Allende.

He collected a pass from Nuno Santos and, as the Chippa defence stood off him, the Chilean midfielder moved towards the edge of the box and picked his spot in the far bottom corner.

It was his fourth goal of the league campaign and his third in six games in the Betway Premiership. For Santos, it was an impressive ninth assist of the campaign.

Rayners scores again

It was 2-0 on 37 minutes as Iqraam Rayners reminded Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos of his qualities, though replays showed he was most likely offside when he scored. Still, without VAR, the goal stood.

Katlego Ntsabeleng, making a rare start this campaign, lifted the ball into the box and Rayners powered his header into the back of the net. To be fair, it was a fine finish; he just looked to be ahead of the last defender as the ball was played.

That is now 11 league goals for Rayners this season, placing him one behind Betway Premiership top scorer Sede Dion. Add four more goals to that and he is up to 15 in all competitions this season. Surely he must be on the plane to Mexico?

Chippa back in it

That should have been that, but almost immediately Chippa hit back. It was quite a simple goal too.

A cross was put into the box and, when Azola Matrose flicked it on, Sinoxolo Kwayiba collected the ball and coolly slotted past an exposed Ronwen Williams.

For once, the Sundowns defence had gone AWOL and Kwayiba was left all alone, making the half-time score 2-1.

Wrapping it up

Tashreeq Matthews sealed the game with a third goal for Sundowns in the 83rd minute.

There was a bit of pinball on the edge of the box and, when it fell kindly for winger Matthews, he stroked the ball into the back of the net to make the points safe.

It was a fourth league goal of the campaign for a player who probably should have more. He got five last season and will be keen to top that number.

How did he do that?

Brayan Leon scored an almost impossible goal to make it 4-1 after coming off the bench.

He chased a pass from Matthews and beat the goalkepeer wide on the left flank, after the latter had rushed out.

Leon re-gathered the ball and then sent a shot towards goal almost from the byline, with such precision that it curled into the back of the net.

Stunning technique and great ambition.

Where does this leave us?

Sundowns are back on top of the Betway Premiership with 53 points from 22 games.

That is two more than Orlando Pirates, who have played the same number of matches.

Both teams will be in action next week as Sundowns travel to Durban City for what will be a tricky encounter against a gritty team.

Pirates are at home to Lamontville Golden Arrows, who can blow hot and cold and are pushing for a top-eight place this season.
