Friday night’s 1-0 win over Durban City ensured Kaizer Chiefs have made their second best start to a Betway Premiership season after 10 games in the previous decade, giving hope that fortunes might be shifting for the Soweto giants.

Flavio Silva’s late headed winner takes Chiefs into fourth place on 19 points, at tally at this stage of the season in the previous 10 years only beaten by the 2019/20 campaign when they had amassed 25 points under coach Ernst Middendorp.

They would finish second that year, pipped on the final day of the season by Mamelodi Sundowns when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Baroka FC.

At that stage, they had a whopping 10-point lead over Sundowns, though they had played two games more.

They have otherwise not managed to get to 19 points by this stage of the campaign over the period.

They recorded 17 in the 2022/23 campaign but ended up fifth that year, and 16 in 2016/17 when they finished fourth.

It is a far cry from the lowly 10 points in the 2020/21 season that ended with an eighth-place finish, or the 11 points in 2023/24 as they finished 10th.

Had Chiefs managed to find their scoring boots on a more regular basis this season their position would be even better.

“You need to win even when you not at your best because remember a few weeks ago, we had some games where we had like 70 percent possession, 20 shots on target but we didn’t win," Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze said after the City victory.

“It’s these kinds of games when you not at your best you need to win to get the three points.

“I think it is a very important result because as you say we are coming from three draws and a loss and it was well very important to build the momentum of CAF Confederation Cup game and to keep going, we are very happy that we got the three points.”

Chiefs are next in action on Tuesday when they host promoted Orbit College, who will be seeking a third win in a row.
