Kaizer Chiefs came from behind to secure a 3-1 Betway Premiership victory at hosts Orbit College in a game that was moved to the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Monday.

It is a third league win in a row for the AmaKhosi, who are now well and truly in the hunt for CAF Interclub football next season.

Orbit College chances

The writing was on the wall for Chiefs before Orbit College scored, with two big chances for young forward Thabang Mahlangu

Mahlangu created a chance for himself on the turn and struck the base of the post, before heading over from a corner as he was left unmarked.

The 20-year-old helped South Africa to the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations title last year and is a player of some promise, having been loaned to Orbit College from Siwelele in January.

He made his Betway Premiership debut all the way back in 2024 but is still waiting for his first senior goal after 15 appearances, though to be fair Monday’s clash was his first start.

A goal for the hosts

Orbit College took the lead on 22 minutes as Mbulelo Wagaba netted, though Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Bvauma will have to take some of the blame.

A free-kick from Lebogang Lesako was floated to the back post and Wagaba managed to steer his header on target.

It was straight at Bvuma though, who flapped at the ball but could not keep it out. He may say he did not have the time to react, but deep down will feel he should have kept it out.

Chiefs equalise

The visitors were ahead just before halftime and it was a well taken goal from Wandile Duba.

Chiefs left-back Bradley Cross sent in a long pass to his feet 12 yards from goal and Duba took a touch that lifted the ball into the air, before acrobatically twisting to fire home.

Orbit College goalkeeper Cyril Chibwe got a hand to the shot, but could not keep it out.

It is a second goal in as many games for Duba, who also netted in the victory over Magesi FC last time out.

The 21-year-old now has nine goals in 56 senior appearances (33 starts), and his talent suggests he can improve on that ratio. This was a quality finish that illustrated his ability.

Shabalala on target

Chiefs looked the most likely to score after that and took the lead thanks to Mdu Shabalala, though Duba had a hand in it as well.

Thabiso Monyane burst into the box on the right-hand aside and his low cross was dummied by Duba, creating time and space for Shabalala to side-foot home.

Shabalala does love scoring against Orbit College. This was his first goal since he netted a brace against the same opponents in November.

A goal to seal it

Chiefs scored their third goal on 79 minutes and it came from the unlikely figure of Siphesihle Ndlovu, whose shot from the edge of the box was deflected past Chibwe by his own defender.

It was a first goal for Ndlovu since he netted the winner against Polokwane City in August, and just his seventh in the league in the last eight seasons.

He had come off the bench, as he has for much of this season, and made the kind of impact he was hoping for.

Where does this leave us?

Chiefs move up to third place in the league with 39 points from 21 games, though they could be overtaken again by AmaZulu, who play later on Monday against Sekhukhune United.

Chiefs are hoping to secure third spot to earn CAF Confederation Cup football next season, and their third league win in a row gives them that chance.

Orbit College remain in the relegation play-off position and should with bottom side Magesi FC and third-bottom Marumo Gallants meeting on Tuesday, they face a difficult task in deciding who they want to win that one.
