Mjallby AIF have won major silverware for the first time in the club's history and completed one of the greatest underdog stories football has ever seen. The team from the tiny village of Hallevik beat IFK Goteborg 2-0 away from home this evening to win the Allsvenskan title.

A 2-0 win for Mjallby over Elfsborg before the international break forced Hammarby to win their away trip to Goteborg the following day and their home match with AIK yesterday to keep the title race alive.

Both ended in 2-1 victories for Bajen, leaving them eight points behind the league leaders with three matches left, thus three points for Mjallby would complete one of the greatest miracle stories in modern football history.

Mjallby were keen to get the story finished as soon as possible, as Elliot Stroud provided home goalkeeper Elis Bishesari with a couple of early testers, before the visitors took a deserved lead with 20 minutes on the clock.

A deep cross from Timo Stavitski on the left found Abdullah Iqbal at the back post, his effort was parried by Bishesari, but MAIF kept the ball alive in the Goteborg box, and Jacob Bergstrom was able to hook the ball beyond the goalkeeper for his second goal in as many games.

Just eight minutes later, Mjallby doubled their lead after the hosts failed to clear a corner - the loose ball was slammed through the crowd by Viktor Gustafsson, and though Bishesari got something behind it, he could do nothing to stop captain Tom Pettersson from powering in the rebound.

With a healthy lead to protect, Anders Torstensson's side sat deep for the rest of the half, as Goteborg failed to break them down and make any inroads before the break.

Goteborg began the second half looking to make MAIF as uncomfortable as possible, and when they caused a rare defensive slip seven minutes in, goalkeeper Noel Tornqvist was there to spring into action as clear the danger.

That was single for the game to open up - seconds later, Herman Johansson broke down the other end and forced the goalkeeper into a good save at his near post. Soon after, Johansson teed up Stroud, who took aim from the edge of the box and saw his shot flash narrowly wide.

Tornqvist had to be alert again inside the final 20 minutes, when an accurate through ball set Max Fenger bearing down on goal, but he was denied by a smart save by the goalkeeper.

MAIF were having to deal with constant pressure on their 18-yard box in the latter stages, but deal with it they did, and when they did manage to break three minutes from time, only a vital block prevented Johansson from steering in a third.

But the two first-half goals were enough for the Mjallby celebrations to begin - the team who had never finished higher than fifth in the Swedish top flight had romped to the title with three matches to spare.

For Goteborg, a third defeat in their last four has left them four points off their Gothenburg neighbours GAIS, who occupy the third and final European place.

Elsewhere on Monday night, Halmstad took a huge step towards survival thanks to a 1-0 win away at Degerfors, which moved them six points clear of the bottom three.

The unfortunate Juhani Pikkarainen turned the ball into his own net after 16 minutes to end the home side's three-match unbeaten run and keep them in 15th place, two points shy of Oster, who occupy the Relegation Playoff place.

The result will also be celebrated by Varnamo, as it keeps their faint hopes of survival alive until at least next weekend.
