Double Rugby World Cup-winning wing Makazole Mapimpi will be chalked off the stand-by list for the Springboks’ Autumn international tour after he was banned for five games on Wednesday following a red card playing for the Sharks against Ulster.

The sanction means Mapimpi is suspended for the Durban-based side’s United Rugby Championship clash against the Scarlets this coming weekend, and also will not be available for the Springboks’ first four games on tour up north.

Mapimpi was not named in the main Springbok squad but did make a list of players coach Rassie Erasmus said he would call on in the event of injury. Given that Kurt-Lee Arendse has only just come back from a long lay-off, Mapimpi may have got his chance.

The dangerous tackle by Mapimpi was on Ulster fullback Michael Lowry as the visitors stunned the Sharks with a 34-26 victory.

The Springboks have yet to say if another player will be added to the stand-by list.

They take on Japan at Wembley Stadium in London on November 1 before travelling to Paris to meet France a week later in a repeat of their 2023 Rugby World Cup quarter-final.

They tackle Italy in Turin on November 15 before the latest instalment of their burgeoning grudge match with Ireland in Dublin on November 22.

They finish the tour against Wales in Cardiff a week later, a game Mapimpi would be available for.
