The Lions thrashed the Sharks while the Bulls brushed aside Western Province in the opening weekend of the Carling Currie Cup.

Proceedings started with a 49-28 win by the Pumas over the Griquas on Friday night, and on Saturday there were two blockbuster clashes, including Province hosting the Bulls in Cape Town for their big derby.

The Bulls nearly registered a half century of points in their 48-23 victory, before which the Lions pulled apart the Sharks in Johannesburg to the tune of 46-5.

The final game of the weekend was the best of the lot, as Boland Cavaliers and the Cheetahs handed out a 72-point classic which the Cavaliers edged 37-35.
