Denmark reached their second successive EURO final when they outfought the Icelandic defense in the final 15 minutes of the game to win 31-28 against Iceland.
Mathias Gidsel, scoring seven from seven, making seven assists, and again playing almost every minute of the match, was voted as Player of the Match. Janus Daði Smárason was the leading goal scorer of the game, netting eight goals from nine attempts.
Iceland began on a bright note and looked very organized around a compact defence, and took plenty of initiative in attack to claim an early three-goal lead.
Denmark struggled to find their rhythm in the first part of the game, and Emil Nielsen did not have as much impact as usual, making no saves in the first 15 minutes before stopping two penalties in a row.
However, thanks to Mathias Gidsel taking charge, Denmark recovered and even briefly took a one-goal advantage before the break.
Displaying incredible endurance and physicality on both sides of the court, Snorri Steinn Guðjónsson’s players remained in the game until the last quarter. Then, Gidsel and Simon Pytlick displayed all their skills to finally pull their team out of harm.
After missing the title in 2024, Denmark will have another chance at winning the gold medal on Sunday.
