The Germans never seemed to truly believe they could pull off an upset, and when Esbjerg scored the match's first three goals, it quickly became apparent which way the game was heading.
The more-than-half-empty arena failed to inspire the home team, who struggled to break down Esbjerg’s strong defense before the break.
When they did manage to get shots off, many were stopped by the arms or legs of Esbjerg’s in-form goalkeeper, Katharina Filter.
The German keeper had been given the starting spot against her compatriots ahead of Silje Solberg, who had otherwise shone in the league match against Nykobing Falster earlier in the week.
The score was 17–9 at halftime, and it was clear that something drastic would have to happen for Esbjerg’s victory to be in jeopardy.
Dortmund’s tactical response was to play seven-on-six in attack, a move that proved quite successful.
They certainly found it easier to create chances, scoring as many goals in the first 16 minutes of the second half as they had in the entire first half.
However, Esbjerg had no trouble finding openings at the other end either. Even though their finishing became a bit sloppy, they maintained a commanding lead.
The only minor setback for the West Jutland side was that defensive specialist Line Haugsted had to leave the court early due to an injury.
