Aalborg Handball looked set to lose Thursday's Champions League meeting with Vive Kielce, but that changed at the last second.
Artsem Karalek wasted a huge chance with four seconds left, and Aalborg quickly moved the ball down the court, where Buster Juul almost sideways threw the ball into the net, a split second before the match was over.
The atmosphere had been at boiling point in the Polish arena, but the equalizer punctuated the party, and Aalborg came away with a point.
From the start, the Danes struggled to contain the threat of the hard-shooting fullbacks Szymon Sicko and Alex Dujshebaev, as well as perhaps the world's best linebacker Artsem Karalek, who remained a huge danger for the Danish defense throughout the match.
In addition, the usual frontmen, Thomas Arnoldsen and Mads Hoxer, were struggling to live up to their usual level in a very physically dominated encounter.
A few minutes into the match, Aalborg was down 1-4, and only Sander Sagosen showed the level that is necessary to lead the Danes to the promised land, the Final 4 in Cologne next year.
The Norwegian scored Aalborg's first three goals, while neither Hoxer nor Arnoldsen came close to making a difference.
German star Juri Knorr was brought on to replace Arnoldsen about halfway through the half, and that changed the dynamics of the match almost immediately. The German scored five goals in five attempts before the break and was a major contributor to Aalborg only being behind by one at half-time (16-15)
After the break, it became a regular tug-of-war.
Thomas Arnoldsen could have put Aalborg ahead for the first time in the match after just over 40 minutes, but, quite symptomatic of his performance, his attempt was blocked.
Buster Juul did the damage a minute later when he scored to make it 21-20 in Aalborg's favor, but the Poles struck back.
The collaboration between Alex Dujshebaev and linebacker Artsem Karalek, in particular, was deadly, creating a two-goal Polish lead with four minutes left in the match.
Aalborg pressed on, but when Kielce had possession and a one-goal lead with ten seconds left, things looked impossible for the Danes. However, thanks to a sloppy Belarusian effort and a clever Buster Juul, Aalborg claimed a point.
