SG Flensburg-Handewitt on Thursday night managed to shake off their first defeat of the season in the Handball-Bundesliga (HBL) to reclaim top spot. Four days after their bitter 30-31 defeat at VfL Gummersbach, coach Ales Pajovic's side beat promoted HBW Balingen-Weilstetten 31-25 (16-11) to move back above level-on-points THW Kiel (both 19 points) thanks to their superior goal difference.

Flensburg's leading goalscorer was Emil Jakobsen with 10 goals. For the visitors, Csaba Leimeter, Lion Zacharias and Tobias Heinzelmann were the leading goalscorers with three goals each.

Flensburg had surrendered top spot after their defeat in Gummersbach, but the northern German side  made a swift return to the summit, at least for the time being.

However, reigning German champions SC Magdeburg, who are third on 18 points, have played one match less. Flensburg face a top-of-the-table clash at Magdeburg on the next matchday in mid-November.

Also on Thursday evening, VfL Gummersbach followed up their impressive performance against Flensburg. Coach Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson's side won 33-26 (15-12) at 11th-placed Frisch Auf Göppingen and moved up to seventh, for now.
