After being down 15.5 games on July 8th, the Cleveland Guardians now share an 85-72 record with the Detroit Tigers atop the American League Central division.

Cleveland owns the tiebreaker after defeating Detroit 5-2 on Tuesday night.

Starting pitcher Gavin Williams earned his 12th win after giving up just two runs on for hits in six innings while striking out 12 and walking two.

Closer Cade Smith came in and earned his 16th save of the season.

After going down 2-0 with Tigers ace Tarik Skubal on the mound, Cleveland scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead - where the ball never even left the infield.

The first run was scored on an infield chopper to third, the second on a wild pitch from Skubal, and the third from a slow chopper to first.

Then in the next inning, Cleveland extended their lead even further.

Daniel Schneemann recorded a two-RBI single in the next inning that gave the Guardians their 5-2 lead en route to a victory.

Back in July, the Guardians were fourth in the AL Central with a 42-48 record while the Tigers (59-34) had sole possession of first and the best record in all of baseball at one point.

Cleveland has now won 14 of their last 15 games as they are the hottest team in baseball with the 2025 MLB Postseason approaching, giving baseball fans everywhere one of the greatest runs in regular-season history.

Detroit, once a premier team that dominated for most of the season, have now lost nine of their last 10 games and currently ride a seven-game losing streak.

As it stands, due to the tiebreaker, the Tigers now have the third Wild Card spot, sitting just half a game over the Houston Astros (84-72). It's not a guarantee, but the Tigers could be looking at one of the biggest fall-offs in recent baseball memory if they can't rebound.
