A Challenger tournament represents the second-highest level of men's tennis, and this marks the first time since 2009 that such a tournament will be held on Danish soil, according to the federation.
The tournament will be named the Kjobenhavn Open and will take place from 5-13 December. It will be the largest professional tournament held in Denmark since Farum hosted a WTA event between 2010 and 2012.
"The Kjobenhavn Open will serve as an important platform for Danish tennis, giving Danish players the chance to compete at a high international level in front of a home crowd," says Alexander Rejnhold, Club Manager at KB Tennis and Tournament Director of the Kjobenhavn Open, in a press release.
One of the Danish players set to benefit from a home-court tournament is Elmer Moller. Currently ranked number 190 in the world, he is also a member of the KB club.
"At Challenger tournaments around the world, I often see local players socializing with friends and family after their matches. Now I get that same opportunity in Copenhagen. It’s great. Plus, it’s a significant move by KB to put Denmark on the tour map," says Elmer Moller.
According to the Danish Tennis Federation, the tournament will feature 32 players who "typically rank somewhere between number 80 and 300."
Michael Ask, Director of the Danish Tennis Federation, is also looking forward to the event.
"For our players, being able to compete in a tournament like this on home soil means a great deal. At the same time, it offers a unique opportunity to see the best Danish men competing against the stars of tomorrow from all over the world."
