Carlos Alcaraz expected to extend his dominance over Casper Ruud and move one step closer to a maiden Paris title

Match News & Form

Casper Ruud suffered a disappointing three-set defeat to Nuno Borges in the second round in Basel a few days ago, despite winning the opening set 6-1. He avenged that loss in the Paris quarterfinals, beating the Portuguese lucky loser 7-6, 6-4.

Ruud has been extremely solid all week in Paris, beating the likes of Rafael Jodar and an in-form Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets. He has become the only semi-finalist at this year’s Paris Masters to reach this stage without dropping a set. More impressively, he has conceded more than four games in a set only once so far, in the tie-break opener against Borges.

Carlos Alcaraz’s time on tour since returning from injury two months ago has been successful, bringing two titles so far, but most of his matches have been filled with tight sets, with Alcaraz nicking most of them thanks to his knack for outplaying opponents in the crunch moments. He did exactly that in the Paris quarterfinals, ending Taylor Fritz’s Turin hopes after fighting back from a set and a break down and saving multiple match points in the second set. The win also helped his compatriot Rafael Jodar hold on to the eighth and final qualifying spot and officially qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin.

Alcaraz had already sealed his ATP Finals place before arriving in Paris, but he is not without a mission here, as he chases his maiden Paris Masters title. He has rarely enjoyed success at this stage of the season, and his title in Vienna last week was his first during the European indoor swing, a phase in which he has struggled throughout his otherwise successful career. Building on that Vienna triumph with a first Paris title would set him up nicely for his bid to win the ATP Finals for the first time later this month. Such a run would also help make up for the disappointments he has faced this year, including losing the world No. 1 ranking.

Head-to-Head: Carlos Alcaraz leads 6-1

Alcaraz holds a commanding lead in this rivalry, but Ruud can take confidence from having won their only indoor meeting, at the ATP Finals in 2024.

Stats & Facts

Casper Ruud has played only two semi-finals at regular indoor ATP events and won both, in Dallas and Stockholm last year.

Ruud holds a poor 7-23 career record against top-5 opponents and hasn’t beaten one in a completed match since Madrid in April 2025.

Carlos Alcaraz is 2-2 in semi-finals at regular indoor ATP events, with his wins coming in Rotterdam in 2025 and Vienna in 2026.

Alcaraz is unbeaten on indoor hard courts this year, winning all nine of his matches, including an exhibition and team events.

Betting Analysis

Both players face a quick turnaround, having finished their quarterfinals late on Friday before returning early on Saturday for the semi-finals, and Ruud faces the harder task after playing last on Friday. However, that is unlikely to be the deciding factor. Carlos Alcaraz holds a massive upper hand in this rivalry and is on a seven-match winning streak, and he is fully expected to extend it as he chases his maiden Paris Masters title.
